Deathbed Atheist

August 19, 2012

I had assumed that the Norma Jean song “Deathbed Atheist” (hearable here, with its solid video) from their excellent album Meridional concerned an atheist on his deathbed, wanting his atheism confirmed. But I just realized that the song could also be heard as concerning a believer on his deathbed, wanting his belief confirmed; wanting to stave off a besetting atheism; fighting against a deathbed conversion to atheism.

This would put quite a different spin on the song’s refrain of “lie to me!”

I don’t think the lyrics are particularly conclusive either way. But the latter is an interesting thought; and it would be quite interesting indeed if that is what Norma Jean intended.
